IPod problem – error 1439?-Collection of common programming errors

I have a 3rd generation iPod nano that was being quite dodgy. The clickwheel and buttons weren’t working, it was totally unresponsive. I tried restoring it – and then a huge problem occured. I think the restore failed and now my iPod is corrupted and it won’t let me restore it it keeps coming up saying
“ipod cant be restored for an unknown error (error 1439)” i have tried EVERYTHING – different usb ports, different usb cables, holding down play and middle button holding down menu and middle button toggling hold button – the only thing ive not tried is updating itunes. is this worth it? as ive read many forums that this has been unsucesful to the problem. whats your opinion? another solution is enabling or disabling disk mode on the ipod itself – but my clickwheel still is unreponsive so i cant do this. please help!

Disk mode doesn’t have anything to do with this scenario. You need to update iTunes. Millions and millions of people use the current version without problems. The people who blame their problems on the “update,” are clueless. Many of them are having problems because they’ve downloaded viruses and lots of other lovely malicious software along with the music they’ve been pirating from shareware. If you don’t have the current version of the software, it can’t check for firmware updates and it can’t do the restore. Not keeping your OS updated is also a frequent problem. Again, iTunes is updated to keep up with your OS. If the OS isn’t up-to-date, iTunes isn’t going to work with it smoothly.
