windows-home-server freeze hp-mediasmart
I have an HP Mediasmart EX485 Windows Home Server, and I will sometimes find it stuck in the morning with a blinking blue server light. (Power is solid, network is off, server is blinking). Some investigation suggested that it is hanging on a reboot. Hard power cycling the unit recovers it.This is problematic as I use the unit remotely, and having it take itself offline from time to time renders it useless until I can get back home and power cycle it.Symptoms:The only external symptom is that is

disk windows-home-server
My Windows Home Server is showing disk issues. In the Event Viewer I get the message:The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\fs\X.When I log onto the Windows Home Server Console I get the message:An unexpected error has occurred in the Windows Home Server Storage ManagerMost of the files on the shared folders are accessible okay, but there are some that I can see in Windows Explorer, but I cannot open them (I do have them backe

virtualization windows-home-server
I’m thinking about virtualizing Windows Home Server, mainly just for some testing and troubleshooting (right now, anyways — nothing long term). I’ve got hardware that should easily pull it off, but because WHS can be a bit of its own beast the way it does file replication, etc., I was wondering if there are any “gotchas” or anything else I should be watching out for? Most particularly, I’m curious if anyone has had any luck using WHS with multiple virtual hard disks to simulate how an actual ph

hard-drive corruption windows-home-server
Possible Duplicate:How to copy files from crashed Windows Home Server Yesterday we had a power surge, followed by a power outage. This left my WHS borked: powering on just gives to a flashing blue light (the led on the power supply also flashes green) – no fan or boot activity, nothing.I urgently needed some files off there in the short term (and the 500GB of photos, music, personal video etc in the long term) so I took the hard drive out and put it in my computer. The files and folders showed u

backup windows-home-server
What ways are there to copy a windows home server backup to an offsite location?I’m talking specifically (and only) about the automated backup of my entire machine, and not the shared network folders.I am 90% working away from home on my laptop which has a 640GB drive so the shared folders are essentially useless to me. I backup every night, but if my house burns down or broken into the I’m in serious serious trouble !I’m really looking for some alternative way to back up my entire machine – whi

backup windows-home-server online-backup
Starting with a little background: I have a home server with Windows Home Server 2011 installed. I make backups of the data stored on my home client computers to the home server using WHS’ built in backup functionality. The actual server data (some of the shares and the client backups) are backed up to an online backup service. Now to the actual question: if my home server would crash, be destroyed in a house fire, etc. and I would reinstall it (possibly on different hardware), would I be able to

ntfs data-recovery windows-home-server
I had a Windows Home server machine that crashed. Before doing anything I decided to get data out of it. So I took the hard drive and connected it to Windows7 pc.What I get is that I cannot access almost any file! I do see directory structure, I can open small files like .txt and .ini but bigger files like .iso and video – no go. Same goes for Ubuntu and OS X – I can see files and even copy them – but they are corrupted.Any ideas for what the problem is?

windows-home-server
I have got this file that I can’t delete. It happened after a system crash, so the CHKDSK kicked in upon next reboot. After that, I can’t delete the file. THis is on Windows Home Server, and the file is one of those hidden Thumbs.db, and my WHS reports a “File conflict” on the file, the reason: Access Denied”What I have tried so far, running as an Administrator: Delete: Access Denied TakeOwn.exe : Access Denied Attrib.exe -s -h : Access Denied cacls.exe : Access Denied (even whe trying to dis

usb windows-home-server
Our WHSv1 file server is almost full, so I took an USB HDD that was lying around (ie: I was using it on another computer, data and partitions are there), and I went to the WHS console to add it to the storage pool.Surprisingly, the disk does not appear in the list, but if I connect via RDP, i can access it.What’s the problem? Does the disk need to be partitionless or unformatted to be added?

Is it possible to restore a windows home server backup of a computer to a virtual machine instead of a computer?Use case: Old computer running XP has hard disk that crashes. Just received a help call from my parents who are having problems with a machine at home running WHS. Basically there are some hardware problems with the machine, and the only thing that my parents know how to do is to buy a IDE-USB converter and attach the hard disk to another machine. The problem is that they can see the files, but cannot copy and paste them, with an error message saying files are inaccessible. In the WHS, files are chosen to have a duplicate copy on another disk, however they

synchronization windows-home-server music photos
In my home, I have two Windows Vista desktops, and two laptops. (One of each for me and fiance) I also have a Windows Home Server running for backups and file sharing. Right now whenever we update our music collections, or one of us downloads photos from the camera, we have to manually make sure each of our PC’s is synched up. I have tried 3rd party sync tools such as Microsoft SyncToy, but I am not happy with the results.Basically, I am wondering two things:Is there a way to set the offline

windows-home-server windows-8
I have a Windows Home Server 2003 running with my shared files on it. I’ve recently updated my desktop computer with Windows 8 and I’m now unable to access the public shares on the WHS box. I did use a Windows Live login for the Win 8 Box. The WHS connector installed just fine, and it is collecting backups of my Win 8 box.I noticed that there’s a local user named mobyt_000 (My hotmail name is mobytoby). I attempted to create a user in the WHS admin console named mobyt_000 and although it did cr

I just purchased this box for home backups for my pc’s and mac’s. Everything works great accept for the remote access part. I can RD into the machine locally but I can’t get to it from outside of my network. I’ve enabled port forwarding on my router but it doesn’t seem to matter. I checked with Qwest and they don’t block these ports so I’m at a loss.I do have Vonage in front of my router but I’ve taken it out and it didn’t make a difference. I suspect I’ve made an error with my router setup. I’m
