13.04 Crash, computer would not even hard reset-Collection of common programming errors

I have a Samsung QX411 laptop with a nonremovable battery with Ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 7 dual-booted. Today when I was on YouTube with Chrome, I had a kernel panic, giving me a black screen of death. I’m very new to using Ubuntu, but switched to Ubuntu for the stability. The keyboard was completely unresponsive, and holding the power button down would not even turn off the computer.

I called Samsung, and they had no answer for the issue of turning their computer off. I’m very nervous about traveling now as I am supposed to take a trip overseas to France in a few weeks, and want to be able to actually turn my computer off. This is the last time I buy something with a nonremovable battery.

My laptop has integrated graphics with no standalone graphics card. These were the last two lines present after the crash:

Kernel panic - not syncing:
Fatal exception in interrupt drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to text console

I’m considering installing a switch in line with the battery. Has anyone experienced this problem before?
