Using type- and memory-safe languages like Java and Scala for server applications gave me the confidence of having a basic level of security (e.g. compared to C). Now with the recent wave of Oracle Java vulnerabilities I noticed that most of them apply for applets in web-browsers and only a minority of them apply to servers. I installed LAMP server on my Ubuntu 12.04 Server PC. I changed the database storage location using my.cnf. After I changed the location it’s working fine. But if I restart my MySQL database is deleted and my database shows empty. I’ve noticed that with Fedora 17, a shutdown operation (e.g., shutdown -h now) has gotten so much faster (feels like 2 seconds max). So I’m wondering if running processes are terminated properly? Especially on Fedora (again, about 2 seconds), I can hardly imagine that every process has enough time to finish.I’m assuming every user process has been closed by the user (manually) before the shutdown command is issued, so only system services are left (still, those may have stuff to do on exit too).

I have a kubuntu 13.04 system that is mutlibooted with windows 7, backbox and centos. The question I have is about the clock. If I shut down with one os and start back with the same OS it will be updated. If I shutdown and start with a different OS it’s off by the number of hours that OS was shut down. I thought it was the bios battery. So, i changed it. I reset the time in the bios. It’s the correct time. But it doesn’t update in any OS unless it was the last OS.Does my bios need to be updated

I recently did in fact have a typo in my syslog.conf file, but I had no idea initially why I couldn’t restart the daemon. I have a quite odd problem. At random times my dovecot daemon dies and I cannot receive/send emails while the host is still up. When trying to SSH into the server to see what happened, I discover that SSH is also dead.After a rebooting the server everything works. We have an application on Linux that used the syslog mechanism. After a week spent trying to figure out why this application was running slower than expected, we discovered that if we eliminated syslog, and just wrote directly to a log file, performance improved dramatically.I understand why syslog is slower than direct file writes. Munin is quite verbose, and logs a bunch of things into munin-graph.log, munin-html.log, munin-limits.log and munin-update.log at each run of munin-cron.I already reduced munin-node logging level by setting log_level 0 in munin-node.conf, and that works well. munin-node.log only gets updated when an error message is generated.However I also tried to add the same option in munin.conf, but it makes munin crash.How one can reduce the amount of logs written by munin?
