debian smtp port exim
Hey, I have a strange problem with my exim4 configuration. I have a dedicated server running debian for quite a long time now, but I’m not really using it actively recently, so everything just worked due to lack of changes ;)However, recently, my exim4 smtp stopped answering on port 25. It does not respond through localhost, as well – even though it’s set to listen on any interface available. Some things I’ve checked:ks:/home/trakos/Maildir/new# netstat -ap | grep eximtcp 0 0 *:smtp

I do this testing process with “telnet localhost 25”, I send a message and it is placed to queue… I feel kindda frustrated as I’ve searched through many, many, many lines of exim specifications… And I simply don’t know how you make exim deliver msgs instantly without placing them to queue?Yet another reason to feel frustration. I’ve shut the interim machine down now, and put the mailboxes on the real server in /srv/scratch/$username/Maildir/…, and need to integrate the messages from them, ideally preserving read/seen state, into the users’ canonical mailboxes, /srv/mail/$username/Maildir/…. I have an email server that’s part of a messaging application, and it’s going to see a lot of throughput. I want to mount Exim’s message queue on a RAMdisk to maximize performance; throughput speed is most important, as opposed to solidarity in case of a crash or system reboot. Does anybody know how I can set a limit for exim4 processes because an application send to our smtp server 4000+ mails and crashed it. I try to add queue_run_max=20in /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template, but nothing happens.Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

I’ve just set up exim on my ubuntu computer. At the moment it will only accept email for accounts that exist on that computer but I would like it to accept all email (just because I’m interested). Unfortunately there seem to be a million exim related config files, and I’m not having much success finding anything on google.Is there an introduction to exim for complete beginners?Thanks.

I’ve recently been battling spam issues on our mail server. One account in particular was getting hammered with incoming spam. SpamAssassin’s memory use is one of our concerns.What I’ve done is enable RBLs in Exim. I now see many rejection notices in the Exim log based on the various RBLs, which is good.However, when I run Eximstats, the numbers seem to be the same as they were prior to the enabling of the RBLs. I am assuming because the email is still logged in some way prior to the rejection.

The linux server where exim service is running is under no load. The system is sending email successfully but is taking a long time to send each email. Basically if I telnet to localhost port 25 and then I try to send an email from there the response from the server is super slow. I have a few e-mail aliases that forward to external hosts. Currently, if the external host rejects a message, Exim generates a bounce message and sends it to the original sender. This is bad because if the external host rejects the message as spam (a common case), then I’m a source of backscatter spam.Thus, if the sender is non-local, I’d like to send the bounce to postmaster (me) instead.
