I am running IE7, I have been able to visit this website since installing IE7, the problem seems to have just occured recently.

I was getting this problem when opening IE7, no matter what website I tried it would come up with that message. I reset my router( pinhole on back of router) and everything works fine now.

  • msdn2

    Hi,

This seems to be more of a network issue than a specific IE7 problem. Have you tried accessing the site using a different browser or from another machine on your network? If this is successful, perhaps you should double check the network settings in IE7:

    Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings

    Regards,

    Wesley

  • msdn3

I ran into a similar problem.

In my case, I was unable to open Compressed Help Modules (.CHM files) with IE7.

I would get “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” and the URL would start with:

     res://ieframe.dll/dnserror . . .

After some heavy lifting, I eventually found the following KB article.  It addresses both types of problems.

You cannot open remote content by using the InfoTech protocol after you install security update 896358, security update 840315, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896054

In your case, the UrlAllowList registry key should help.

In my case, the MaxAllowedZone key helped.

    A key snippet:

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp]   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]

      “MaxAllowedZone”=dword:00000001

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]
      “UrlAllowList”=”http://www.wingtiptoys.com/;http://www.contoso.com/”

My problem opening CHM (help) files yielded error messages like this:

     Cannot Open the File:

     res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff_webOC.htm#mk:@MSITStore:C:\path\sample.chm

My Event Viewer (Application Error Log) had entries like these:

     Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( ITSS )
     Event ID ( 1904 ) in Source ( HHCTRL )

In some cases, however, the above fix was not enough.

In those cases, the “unblock” solution described below did the job:

How to unblock downloaded Compressed Help Modules (.CHM)
     http://pointerx.net/blogs/glozano/archive/2006/04/06/151.aspx

Essentially, CHM files can be unblocked by clicking “Unblock” from the “General” tab in the CHM file’s “Properties” window.

    For more information, see:

     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358

The above link describes security issues involving the InfoTech protocol (A/K/A: ms-its ITS ITSS).

I am having the same problem but can’t find out how to fix it. Did anyone reply to you query? I would be most appreciative if you could tell me if and how you solved the problem.

  • msdn5

    Rasta,

you seem like a guy who knows his way around computers. Me however, I’m totally inapt to understand your solution.

I get the same message each time I try to go on the internet with desktop computer, resulting in “The page cannot be displayed”. With my laptop, working via the same, wireless, router and also with IE7, I do get to go on the web??? Also, my e-mail does work and so do Skype and Messenger???The problem must be with my desktop. The diagnostics service from my internet provider and on my computer all say the connection is fine. What do I do?

The solution to this stupid error is as stupid as it is

Open your internet explorer then go to TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then SECURITY and then uncheck the ENABLE PROTECTED MODE options then close and open your IE7and you are welcome.I think it is a conflict in the stupid IE7 caused by a spyware or virus.Just someone take it from here and find the cause.one more thing you are all welcome to EGYPT.

  • msdn7

I started notcing this error after I upgraded to IE 7.  I do not think it is a network issue, because while the problem occurs, I can ping external sites.  Yet I cannot even open up my DLS Modem’s admin page. I also cannot use Netscape when this problem occurs. And  the solution is always to re-boot my computer.

I think the upgrade to IE 7 may have damaged a certail .dll at the OS level, whatever sits between the Browser and the lower level networking protocols.

Egyptian, I tried your solution, but could not find the “protected mode” option.

  • msdn8 dont worry mate firefox browser will work just fine and if you can’t see the option in your internet explorer do the following1- open your IE7

2- when you get the error page click

Diagnose Connection Problems3- click Turn off that’s it!for more help go to http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1744/vista_tcp_cannot_communicate_primary_dns_server

  • msdn9

None of the above suggestions worked. It turned out to be a firewall issue. Using ZoneAlarm, I had to allow out going DNS/DCHP in the trusted and internet zone for High settings. After selecting this, I no longer got the ieframe.dll error message in IE7. By the way, until I made this selection, Firefox wouldn’t work either.

  • msdn10 that is a different story because what you did is that you allowed internet access that was blocked by zonealarm and it comes from bad configurations of zonealarm.we are talking about internet explorer 7 of windows vista!

  • msdn11

I am running Windows XP and IE7.  When trying to open access the internet I get the error

that you’ve been discussing:  res: ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm

I have tried everything that has been recommended (that applied to my system) and thus far

nothing has worked.  I have been told by several IT people that it is a virus or spyware.  I had ran  numerous virus/spyware scans using my Trend PC-cillin software and have deleted all “suspicious”

items and am still getting the same message.

    Any more suggestions?

  • msdn12

Remember when the problem started. I mean on what date. Then restore your PC to a previous point before the problem occured. That should take care of the problem. It worked for me. In case you don’t know how to do this, follow this directions>>>

Click on Start, All programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

I hope this solves your problem.

  • msdn13

I thought of that too and thought for sure that would solve the problem, but it won’t let me select a restore date previous to a couple of weeks ago and the problem started before that.

  • msdn14

If you can’t restore to a previous point then the only thing I suggest is to wait until someone finds another way. If you really need this done right away then I suggest you back up all your files if you can, and then restore the OS with your restoration Disk. I know that should be the method of last resource, but that would for sure take of the problem.

  • msdn15

I got the same thing today after installing Norton System Works.  Uninstalled it and all is well again.

    George

  • msdn16

Since I have Spy Sweeper, what worked for me is making a quick change by opening Spy Sweeper and clicking on “Shields Summary” then “Network” tab.  Uncheck “Common Ad Sites”.

  • msdn17 (((for people with IE7 under windows xp)))If you get this kind of message it is because of 2 main reasons:1-Your firewall is blocking IE7 and to fix it all you have to do is uninstall the firewall or configure it right.2-You are infected by a spyware that is missing up IE7 and to fix that use the following tools i personally use for more than 5yrs and they just work great.http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtmlthis tool will reset your internet configurations to default like if you just installed windows xp in 1 sec.Another tool i use and also works even greater for beginners and will make you even happierhttp://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtmlthis tool has everything from repairing IE7 to fixing permissions to fixing windows update and more.Just smile and enjoy your windows and don’t forget to put an egyptian style background on your windows xp desktop.Yalla take care people.

  • msdn18

I am having the same problem with IE7. On startup the browser will not go to the homepage. I get the error ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm. This is after the browser tries to find the homepage for about 20 seconds or so during which the status pane has a magnifying glass and the words: looking up google.com

I have combed this Sony Vaio and I cannot find it. I even had Microsoft involved because it happened during during a time when updates had been installed. They tried everything I tried but they went into start >run>msconfig and disabled all startup items and services except microsoft and the problem went away. They told me it was not the OS that it was some program on my machine and goodbye. I said don’t close the case so they left it open and called me back every day for two weeks at midnight or 2 AM from India.

They wanted to Re-Install IE 7.0. but I never have been here when they have called so it is not done. I have checked with Housecall, Nortons, Adaware, Spybot and Spyware Terminator and A Squared free. No problems found.

To get the browser to connect I have to restart it over and over or use the Network Troubleshooting Wizard which reports all is working fine. Then the browser works perfect. If I reboot, the problem is right there again. Once I get it to connect it works fine all day. I tried resetting the Linksys Router and the Cable Modem. No Luck.

Occasionally if I let the machine boot and walk away, Norton will do a quick scan in the background. It does that sometimes on bootup. When it does, it connects to Symantec to get info of some sort. Thing is, the browser works after Norton stops doing the scan. Its only because Norton was able to punch a hole in the firewall and connect so the browser is able to as well. But not on a restart.

Once in a great while it will work. Not very often. And by the way, my system restore will not work either. I pick a restore point to a week before this started (March 25th) and the restore fails. Every restore point I try Fails. The problem started on April first for me. Thats why I chose the Sunday before 3/25  to restore to. It will not work or to any other date before.

We all have a problem here that we need to fix but so far we have all tried the same things. I am so surprised Microsoft has not come to the rescue.

Please keep in touch on this. I will check back here evey day and share whatever I can on my progress with this problem.

PS. Thank you all for helping -it was great to find this thread, I am so confused by this problem. Oh. by the way, Norton Tech Support disabled all of their services during a support call and the problem still hapened. They said it was not the firewall or AV software -They said Goodbye. I say Hello!

  • msdn19

Hello,I have been following this thread because I have been having a similar problem.

However ie7 entirley doesn’t work for me. It just comes up with the

‘Res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm#’ message. However I am also having problems connecting to the iTunes store which displays an Unknown error (-3256).Does this ring any bells with anyone?I recently began using the Mask Surf Standard IP mask, the problem started shortly after I began using that. Could this contribute to the problem, or is it a completley different thing?Anyway thanks in advance,

I do not know what happened but I went to Trend Housecall and ran a scan. I did so a few weeks ago and was able to get by the Java install prompts somehow and run the scan. This time it would not run unless I installed Java. So I did. I took Java off my PC a long time ago because of a Java related virus I was delivered.

Anyways when I installed Java the setup wanted to install the Google toolbar. I said no.

But I chose to install the Google Desktop search. The program indexed my machine, sent the report to Google (and who knows where else, give you three guesses) and now I have that search functionality which is really nice. I like the way it works.

After the Desktop search was installed the ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm problem went away. The browser now opens and connects to Google without a problem. The first time I connect after bootup it is a bit slower but once I am up and running it runs faster -and I clear the cache to be sure I am not going to temp files. My PC connects to google when I bootup to update the indexing info. So the Search Indexing function sets up the connection -I think. Not sure why it is working but it is now.

    Boy I hated that problem.

I am going to change the homepage and see if the problem comes back although I do not think it will as the Google Search index connects everytime I boot the machine before the browser is even opened.

What do you guys make of this?

I am still surprised Microsoft has not responded to this thread.

    Aren’t You?

  • msdn22

    Ron,

Thanks a lot for the info about Trend Housecall, which I’m assuming is a website that either updates problem settings or tells you what needs to be done.  I haven’t tried that yet because my computer is still too trashed from trying to set up a DSL about 6 weeks ago that it wouldn’t be worth it.

And, no, I’m not especially surprised that MS hasn’t written in with a fix or workarounds or even acknowledgement that there is something wrong.  They’re still too much the “600-pound gorilla” that this probably falls under the category, “If those idiots can’t set up their systems right we’re not going to bother”.  Sorry about the b****ing but I used to be a programmer and if we ever put out the kind of garbage that shows up in some of their stuff we’d be fired.  Instead, MS does “enhancements” or “upgrades”.

By the way, someone in this thread mentioned DSL and the problem seems to be pretty much firewall related, so I’ll pass along something that I’ve unfortunately learned over the last month.  DO NOT EVER HAVE TWO FIREWALLS RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME.  This will trash your system and be very expensive to recover from.  It turns out our local phone company/DSL provider automatically installs Windows Firewall as the default firewall during setup.  It happens that I have a separate firewall/virus/spam/everything else package running and their instructions never said to stop it.  It took about a week for the system to build up enough oddball errors and whatnot to finally kill it – no way to do backups, copies, or anything to salvage it because it suddenly stopped booting.  I didn’t have a clue what it was and ended up with an executive techie from the phone company.  We knew something was screwy with the firewall because one of their junior people went and cancelled ours online to “fix” it, but the senior guy had never heard of anything like that before(!).  I was finally able to track the errors back to the date and time we started our install of their software in the event logs.  Of course, after I heard from several other people what caused it and that they spent megabucks fixing the same problem, it was too late.  No matter how far back I try to restore, the system gets so unstable after a week or two that I’ve got to back everything up and start over.  I’m finally starting with my original system install disk from 2003.  But at least I’ve got DSL now so the hundreds of updates from MS will download fast!

    Rose

  • msdn23

    Rose,

I am sorry about your problem with DSL. I never chose it for connectivity only because we have cable modems here in Rochester. I run Nortons and have had good success with it but still I get malware and spyware time to time. I am running Spyware tTerminator which I like too. I have to say that things still go wrong and I never feel like it is my pc anymore. Other people always have the keys to it. Ther are so many ways into a PC and ports to pop open. They do it all the time.

This error wea all have been talking about, I was on Yahoo last weekend and suddenly my hard drive started sewing. I hate that. The next time I booted I had theie framedll error again. THIS TIME someone had gone into IE7.0 and changed my Security Steeings from Medium -High to some “Custom  Level”. Not me. I used to wonder if Nortons or Microsoft did that running updates and patches etc. I don’t know. I reset the level to the default Medium -High and ieframe,dll/dns error went away. I found it relatively fast this time.

The real wuestion here is what is the error telling us? What does it really mean? Is it a cover for something very intrusive that is happening when we open IE7.0.

I do not know. I do know this, I am buying the Sony Restore kit for this PC and will be backing up everything I have. I have alot already but I am going to do an incremental to be sure. I know it will come one day when this OS just opens up and becomes trashed by someone out there running my PC as a console for something else.

It kills me that Microsoft will not touch this thread. There are some real heavy hitters in these forums that could help. But they don’t. Maybe they really don’t have a clue what this is Rose.

By the way, Trend Micro is the website you need to visit for the virus check. It is free. They find stuff nobody can. Go to Trend Micro.com and click on one of the links for support  fo the home PC. You will find it. I don’t know it I can put a link in here or I would post it. You need Java to run the service. Just Google Trend Housecall.

    Good Luck Rose!

    Ron

  • msdn24

    Hi Ron,

I’ve been having this problem too and I’m also very much puzzled by it. I’m seriously considering a change of routers (I have a Linksys now) because this problem with IE7 untill now occurs only in combination with my own router. On other, public and non public, Wifi routers I’m not having this problem (let’s hope it stays like that).

The strangest thing is that prior to the problem I had been running IE7 for months without any problems…

First the problem started with Google-websites only. During that period I was still able to access other websites. Later all websites started showing these errors: ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm# or ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff.htm#.

I’m not a computer expert but untill now I was able to “solve” the problem by filling DNS-numbers in my router (I got them from my Internet Service Provider). Usually IE7 would work then. After a while it would stop working, but I could usually make it work again by removing the DNS-numbers. Filling in, filling out…to me this seemed pretty absurd but it worked somehow…

But after a while this method stopped being effective. That’s when I found your thread. I did what you did (installing Java + Google Desktop Search) and, indeed, for a while everything seemed fine. Untill last week…right now I’m not able to acces IE7 whatsoever, even though my computer clearly indicates that I have an “excellent” internet connection.

Anyway, I’m pretty much exhausted by this problem. The most frustrating thing is that it doesn’t make any sense. You never know when the problem will pop up and when it will go away. I share your amazement about the silence of the professionals.

    Best regards and good luck,

    Stéphane

  • msdn25

    Stephane,

I am exhausted by it too. I do not know why your IE 7.0 will not work at all. That is not good. I have had good luck since I reset  my security settings back to medium high. I  have not had a problem since.

I recommend running some scans in Safe mode. Dump everything out of temp and clear out all the cookies and cache. Yeah I know you did that already.

Keep scanning your PC, go to Trend Housecall, and install Spyware Terminator from Snapfiles. Stay off the risky websites and reset that router again.

It all adds up but how I do not know.

    Stay in touch

    Ron

  • msdn26 I am having problems like this, all I did was install all the latest security patches from Microsoft, and IE will not run.It wants to download the ieframe.dll – cannot do anything with the browser, as it closes down.

Will have to use Firefox then

  • msdn27

i randomly got this problem yesterday –

       night before everything worked fine.

next day, when i open IE (7) it consistently gave me a message pop up to save or cancel download of ieframe.dll, when i save windows says it cannot open the file, when i cancel IE quits.

i, very unfortunately, have aol running on my pc as well, and aol has no problems – which is itself quite unusual, aol: what was i thinking!? – it is an IE specific problem. i’ve tried disabling all IEs add-ons, restarting IE, and disconnecting from the network for a while.

not tried this idea of powering down the modem but i will.

       and then i’ll download firefox!

  • msdn28

I have read through this whole thread – have the same problem, but have no idea how to resolve it. I do know, however, that if I restore to a point before I did the MS automatic updates (all those security ones) everything is fine – but that isn’t the point is it?

Please could someone let me know (in seriously layman language) what is the best solution to this problem. I am on XP.

    Any info appreciated.

  • msdn29

I am getting the same problem with IE.70 using Vista.  I am consitantly prompted to download ieframe.dll.  Navcanci unknown file 2.46k

I believe this problem is caused by the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB931768).  By backing this update out  you will at least be able to use Explorer and search for a solution.  Hope this works for you.

The nav…. indicates that this is a Symantic prob. I am running Norton antivirus 2007.

Good luck.  let me know if you find a solution.

  • msdn30

Thanks, believe me, if I find a solution I will post it LOUD AND CLEAR. I don’t have Vista and use Trend – not Symantic though.

As you say, at least I can get on with it whilst looking for a solution.

Will let you know if and when……………..

  • msdn31

    This is misleading. Try again!!!

  • msdn32

    Hi!

I have the same problem from only recently. When I trie to start IE (i’m talking about Vista) or open a link the message (File download-security warning/ namenserror/from:IEiframe.dll) appears and the browser closes.

BUT my PC is devided into several accouts and the error occures only in one of them

    No spyware detected…

  • msdn33

This is an interesting one. The error message appears to be a generic failure to identify an internet connection. I got this after the latest auto-update, and cannot connect despite restoring to previous checkpoint. Firefox works without a problem, but IE7…

I don’t yet have the solution (have tried disabling firewalls, re-installing IE7, removing all third-party add-ons etc.). But when accessing my wireless network through IE7/tools/internet options/connections/setup/view wireless networs in range, my home network appears as “disconnected”. Nevertheless, it is connected since I can use firefox etc., and appears connected when same window is accessed through the taskbar (start/connect to/show all connections/view available wireless networks). Is IE7 pointing to different settings? Anyone has any idea of how I could check this(perhaps another user account on the same computer?).

    Thanks

    HJ

  • msdn34

    Problem solved for me…

Turns out the latest auto-update had reactivated the Windows Firewall – hadn’t seen this happen recently! turn the firewall off and IE7 is back on track. Obvious but worth checking. Good luck to all.

  • msdn35

Same EXACT problem happened to me yesterday.  Did you find a fix?      The thing that sux here is it’s my studio machine.I first noticed it when I went into the studio and the computer I never shutdown, had  “recently updated and rquired a restart”???

I couldn’t get the save/cancel thing to stop, so I restored back a couple days, and VIOLA!  Fixed so I thought….  went in today and and the machne had “updated and restarted” and guess what.  same thing.  definately IE specific.  Anybody got a fix?

So then ALLOW thru the firewall  Should achieve the same result right?  Operating with no firewall is crazy.  : )

What about Removing any Norton remnants?  I use AVG and if it is a norton thing…Virus and spyware scans have come up empty here.

    Aren’t these kinda things annoying?

  • msdn37

If this happened after Security patches were installed Microsoft will help you with the problem for free..But they call from India at 2AM. or while you at work and they leave a number that is not toll free.

They tried alot of things on my machine that did not work.

Their phone number is on the IE 7.0 support page. Just call and wait on hole until someone picks up. Do something while waiting. The people who field the call are pretty nice but some of the support techs are real hackers. One guy had me disable all processes and services with msconfig. IE 7 worked perfectly but I had no functionality.. He said it is not Microsoft it is something else on your machine. and he told me the peoblem is gone “Yes”? I aid “yes” then he said now run it that way.

I almost died on the spot

The case is still open and tey do not know what to do ecept they want to reinstall IE 7 from India.

Also, I cannot run a system reatore. It fails no matter what restore point I chose.  What is wrong with system restore?

I am running now but it was because something on Yahoo reset my security settings to “Custom”. I found it and Reset the security to Medium High now the ieframe error has stopped.

This is a bad problem everyone. I wish Microsoft would help but I do not think they can.

    Ron

  • msdn38

I called Norton when this started because I thought it was the firewall. They went into msconfig and disabled all Norton processes and startups and the problem still occurred. They said “It is not Nortons it is something else” and hung up.

They showed me Start> Run> MSCONFIG.  You can disable processes and startup items and restart the machine to check for problems. There is a checkbox for “Hide all Microsoft services” so you can see what is running and selectively disable things that are not essential but may be causing problems. All you have to do is select normal startup on the settings tab and it will put the PC back to the way it was, And when you are running it, the utility keeps you aware it is running and helps you configure or shut it off if you need to. Kind of harmless and it is interesting.

If you disable everything but Microsoft services the problem “ieframe” goes away, at least it did on my machine. This was weeks ago. Since I installed the Google Desktop search It has gone away.

If this happens during a security update you can get support from Microsoft for free. Just call the IE7 support number.

I do not think it is a Virus or Spyware. I think it is a bug but I cannot figure it out.

his forum has been really activelately I get several alerts now every day. Everyone should talk to their IT friends so we can fix this somehow. Soon we will.

  • msdn39

Don’t disable the Firewall, the problem still need a solution from Microsoft I think, I have the same problem, and I tried all the following :

    – Disabling the Firewall, no good.

    – Restore to a previous point, good but the Update is back then the error.

    – Reinstall the IE, good but the Update is back then the error.

    – Reset the Internet Security settings, no good.

    – Using Blank home page, no good.

It does not matter you have XP or Vista, simply the problem is with the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 (KB931768).

    Temporary Solution:

    – Control  Panel > Internet Options > Advanced > Move Down to Phishing Filter and Disable it.

  • msdn40

    Ashraf,

In my IE7 advanced options the phishing filter is on. And I am still running ok. But I am on XP home edition. No vista for me not yet anyways.

    The Microsoft firewall is off.

Nortons has a phishing filter as well.

It has something to do with IE security though because if you read back in the thread I mentioned the problem went away when I installed the Google Desktop Search and Java while visiting Trend Micro for a Housecall scan.

Then a couple weeks later one day I was on Yahoo and suddenly my hard drive started sewing or running and running. Then ieframe.dll error was back on the next boot up.

I checked my IE7.0 Security settings and they were changed to Custom!!!!

I changed it back to Medium High and then everything was working fine.

First it was Desktop search /Java, then Security settings that made a difference.

I think you are right Ashraf, Microsoft will need to fix this problem sooner or later. I hope.

So far I am OK. I do not go anywhere but a few sites I trust and that is it. Plus I delete mail before it is downloaded if it is SPAM.

I will post more when I learn more.

    Thanks

    Ron

Hi Wesley, After searching the internet for an answer ,your seems to come close …. My problem is that the Windows Pop-up

    “File Download -Security Warning”

    From : ieframe.dll

    Save or cancel

    The file you are downloading……

Shuts down all attempts at lauching I-7 or getting on the internet for that matter. As this is the case I cannot access the IE-7 Tool bar or much else related . Any ideas about rooting out this troublesome Pop-Up message ? Thanks in advance . My OS is Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2

Thanks in advance as I’ve had no luck anywhere else , especially the Micrsoft MAZE !

  • msdn42

I´ve tried almost everything that you guys have mentioned here but none of them worked… The only solution in my opinion is wait until MS comes to help us or reboot the OS.

    Greetings

  • msdn43

Ashraf,Successfully applied your temporary solution. May be the best option for now till Microsoft comes up with a solution. Thanks.

  • msdn44

I tried Ahhraf’s solution -still couldn’t connect – so backed out again. I must just mention that I have two PC’s – one has XP pro and the ther XP Home – the XP home edition is not affected by the update and is fine.

I eagerly await the MS fix.

Happy to hear any other suggestions in the meantime.

  • msdn45

  • msdn46 I think I have found the solution after a thorough search.P.A Bear on this forum gives a procedure which worked for me.. http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=744145 The problem lies with Windows Update itself and relates to the scvhost vulnerability found earlier this year,in what is now the older version of Windows Update itself.Read P.A Bear’s post and links carefully. What I did personally was this.I turned off the phishing filter and returned the Internet history folder to it’s default location. This enabled me to stop I.E 7 from crashing after using update, but I still had the problem now of being continually prompted to update KB 931768.Now you have to put the newly released version of Windows Update on your computer, which will solve the corruption problems.I followed these steps 1) First, show hidden files, folders, and system files2) Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.Delete the contents of this folder. Exit Windows Explorer.

Initiate a manual visit to the Windows|Microsoft Update site.I was prompted to update Windows Update itself to the new version. It then reported after install I had applied all critical updates successfully and so here I am .It seems there was an underlying problem around for a while and Microsoft is sure the new version of Windows Update has addressed it.

  • msdn47

Thank you to Ashraf Farrah  for your insite on the phishing advise that worked fine and also thank you aquarium  for icing on the cake of information for this problem. My wife and I are sitting back to back looking for answers and I read alot slower than her and as I was getting to the solution she touches my shoulder and says look and she followed all the instructions except for aquarium instructions because she was afraid or did not know how to do what you suggested but I wanted to show her and she said I dont care just Do it cause today is MY DAY ( Mothers lol ) Anyway this was a great mothers day present to her to get it fixed. The problem happened last night suddenly and my solution after trying countless things was to just install firefox lol but no that was not good enough for her. So again I have learned a little more by trial and error and want to thank you all for the help. I do however have one request, if turning off the phishing filter that is built into IE7 than maybe it is some sort of hacker scheme to get you to turn the filter off so them can now continue their diabolical plans, anyways, Thanks again for the time you all put into this problem.

PS – IBM can goto hell for closing down my department and outsourcing it to another country. Thanks IBM, that is all, kkthxbye

  • msdn48

Good news to hear it helped you fix the problem. In case you are worried you can now turn the phishing filter back on again.I am writing this using Internet Explorer 7 with the filter on and have no issues,so it seems all worked out in the end.

  • msdn52

If this problem just occurred out of the blue before you attempted to update from the Windows site,I would roll-back to I.E 6 or reinstall I.E 7.Either way I would think you had to install the newer version of Windows Update itself.Your problem is most likely the result of a svchost corruption inherent in the older version of Windows Update.See my previous post on this.Good Luck.

I am new to the board but had to reply.  the ieframe.dll error happened to our computer today.  I tried everything and then found this forum.  I wanted to say  THANKS  !!!!   It was immediately helpful.  Thanks again.

  • msdn56 Had the very same error on a couple of clients and after hours of serious trouble shooting I think the error somehow is related to accessing temporary internet files (which is a protected OS folder).I used control panel -> internet options -> Browsing history -> settings… -> move folderAfter moving temporary internet files IE7 works again. But only until you reboot the system. After reboot the problems is back (ie closes and asks where to save files). Moving temporary internet files once again solves the problem, until next reboot and so on.The clients at my site that experience these problems has nothing obvious in common except for standard MS software and the same patchlevel (via WSUS). The error seems to be clearly related to KB931768 and the handling of temporary internet files in some way. Hopefully MS will provide a correction for the patch since it is obvious that a lot of system experience problems after applying the patch.

  • msdn57

Yes this is definately related to a IE 7 Update.  It has caused me a world of headaches.   It ended up slowing my computer to a crawl.  Going back and forth, eliminating the nuisance file prompt and trying to get back  to some sort of functionality on my machine, I  finally had to factory restore the machine in my recording studio, and am still, after two weeks, re-installing applications, drivers and re-indexing about 160,000 files.  THANKS MICROSOFT.

Believe me if there were some way to file a lawsuit for time lost and damages, I would be the first to sign on the dotted line.

And I am just a small business, imagine all the problems this glitch is causing with others. I don’t know how they could release this  as an AUTOMATIC UPDATE to the general public when it had the potential to do so much damage.  And then to more or less ignore the problem when there is a forum thread dedicated to it… very poor indeed.

My advice is DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATES!!!   IE 7 was nice, but if I feel the need for a Tabbed Browser in my studio again, I’ll use Mozilla.

Good luck to any one having this problem.   Backup everything while you can.

  • msdn58 res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm#I keep getting this error, and follow the instructions to fix the problem.  The problem isn’t getting fixed.  Should I uninstall my Explorer and reinstall an older version?

  • msdn59

Mark:  I have suffered from this problem for weeks now. It came out of no where!  I Googled “navcancl” and “ieframe.dll” and came up with a couple of Microsoft Knowledge Base forums that had work-arounds posted by Microsoft.  Go to the support.microsoft.com/kb site and search “navcancl” and there is a work around for both XP and Vista – IT WORKS!  Apparently the issue for me was that IE was looking for my “temporary internet files” folder in the wrong place.  When it didn’t find it where it thought it should, it shut down IE.  Unfortunately I have 2 domains on my system since it is a legacy corporate PC – once I changed the setting for IE so that it directed itself to my other temp file folder my problem disappeared immediately.  By the way – this is the first suggested fix in the list of 2 possible fixes from Microsoft. Good luck.

  • msdn60

Hi all!! I had the same problem where my internet was working, but the only that would connect was the Mozilla Firefoz browser.  My internet explorer (7) could not connect to any site and no other applications (i.e. AIM, MSN Messenger) could connect.  At the bottom of the IE, Res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm

while it was loading.  I restored my computer to an earlier date and it worked for a bit, then the problem started again about 3-4 days later.  To solve this problem, I called my ISP who helped me solve the problem.  I’m not sure if it will work for everyone, but it worked well for me.  (I am running on DSL, using Windows XP, and IE 7.) This is what he told me to do:1. Disable your FIREWALL first.  Then in your IE, go to TOOLS, then Internet Options.2. Click on the CONNECTIONS tab.3. Click on LAN SETTINGS at the bottom.4.  Uncheck the 3 boxes.  Then OK. OK.5. Restart your IE and go to website.  It should now work.  Then you can turn your firewall back on.Hope this helps many people.

  • msdn61

My fix was to go into TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS then I deleted the browser cache, cookies, history and form data.  After that the ieframe.dll error went away.

  • msdn62 A friend of mine is having this problem and I was hoping to find a fix in this forum but sofar nothing I’ve found here has fixed the problem. She’s running winxp, ie7 and her internet connection is via WildBlue (a satellitelink). It turns out she can get mail, use ftp and can access secure sites.  This means thathttps, smtp and ftp protocols are working.  But http is NOT.She cleared her cookies and cache, moved IE’s temporary internet filesback and forth, disabled phishing and rolled back KP931678, NO luck!Firefox doesn’t work either.  It just displays a blank page and then displays”done” in the status bar at the bottom.  When you look at the page source allyou see is the several lines of html beginning with .I found and sent her a version of “wget” that runs on winxp and had herrun:   “wget -d www.google.com” in the cmd window and it reports   Read Error Connection Reset by PeerWildBlue has been working fine for over a month.  But at this point we can’t rule out WildBlue being the cause of the problem because nothing that’s worked for others has worked for her.Any suggestions of what else to try?Reno-Pete

  • msdn63

    Hi all,

This problem took me a full day to solve.

Like many people I use antivirus software and windows firewall.

Simpel. Just turn it off. The following software blocked my ISP and I got  this “Re: Res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm#” error, maybe

the following would help for you :

Spyware Doctor –> OnGuard –> Off (Norton Antivirus or something else)

    McAfee –> turn everything off

Windows fire wall –> turn it off

The update of IE7 is a problem, each time after the WinUpdate the settings get back to basic.

Hopefully it helps you through this irritating problem…

    Regards,

    Sander M

  • msdn64

I have read all the recommendations re this problem.  I had the same problems – sudden error message, IE and Firefox would not connect, could not Restore.  I’ve tried all the recommendations on this site – reset router, adjusted IE security level, etc. All no help.  In my case it was a FIREWALL problem.  I was using PC Firewall Plus (in addtion to Norton).  I cancelled PC Firewall Plus and all was OK.

  • msdn65

I managed to rid myself of this problem a few months ago when I installed Google desktop search and Java on my machine. I was at the Trend Micro Website doing a housecall trying to see if I had a virus causing the problem. Well, I had a virus and it was some kind of dialer program but I do not know what it was up to. To run the housecall I had to install Java and I elected the Google serach function as well. The ieframe.dll error went away.

Then a month or so later I was on Flikr looking at some pics and the Hard drive just started running away. The problem came right back from the Yahoo Flikr website.

This time I found my IE7 security settings were set to custom by some malicious access to my machine. Man that is junk. Nobody should be able to get into my PC. I reset the Security level to default and the ieframe.dll error went away and IE 7 worked fine for a couple more months.

Last weekend the same thing happened. I was on Flikr looking at some pics and the Hard drive started to run like mad. THIS time I could not find the problem so I started thinking it through. If the Temporary Internet files are not being accessed correctly like some have said here in this forum then maybe I need to look at the settings for “Check for newer versions of stored pages”. It is in “Internet Options” setup. I deselected “Automatically” and selected “Every time I start Internet Explorer”.

The ieframe.dll error went away immediately. It has something to do with the browser being stupid when it opens, no references, not cached info and no dns visibility -I think.

I meant to post this earlier this week but have been so busy. I think there is another bug in IE 7 they cannot fix and there are websites out there causing the problem to occur.

I do not know what it is but the things I mentioned here have fixed the problem. I run Norton Internet Security and Spyware Terminator simultaneously fo maximum protection but never has a shield or norton firewall configuration caused this problem to occur. It comes from websites out there that run code on your PC.

    I am sure of that.

Keep working this problem everyone. I hope this helped.

    Ron

  • msdn66

I had this same error yesterday: no IE7, no Firefox, and tryied every solution I could think of, and the ones that you presented here, guys. I did two things at the same time, so I do not know what did the trick:

    1. I setted my startup back to normal (Run/open: msconfig/general/normal startup). I had it in selective before in order to make startups quicker

    2. I uninstalled Norton Antivirus

    3. Restarted the system

I suspect Norton was blocking me, eventhough I haven’t even opened it in a long time.

Now IE7 and Firefox are working fine… but me, I think I lost some of my sanity working the solution by myself…

If Mr. Gates is that rich and powerfull, can’t he make this technology stuff better?

  • msdn67

    Hey everybody.

I have been watching this thread with interest for a couple of weeks because I too am having problems with this annoying error.  I have a couple of interesting points to make though which may help diagnosis…??

    1)  I run my computer on 2 seperate networks – at work and at home.  At work, it is on a private local network governed by a proxy server.  I ONLY GET THE IEFRAME.DLL MESSAGE WHEN USING THE INTERNET AT HOME.  Whilst at work, everything runs 100% fine.

The only operational difference between using the computer at work or at home, is that when I come home to use my computer, I have to go into INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS > LAN SETTINGS and uncheck the “Use a Proxy Server” box.

    2)  Contrary to what a lot of people are posting, I do NOT only have this problem with IE7.  I have the same problem with both Firefox and the new Apple Safari for Windows.  They do not display the ieframe.dll/dnserror message like IE7 does, but the symptoms are the same – i.e. at random intervals on random pages, the browser instantly refuses to load the page and displays an error screen instead.

Could this mean that it is not an IE7 problem per se, but perhaps a Windows issue that is “activated” by the IE7 updates?

Any further thoughts would be muchly appreciated!

  • msdn68

    Yes Sir Vibro.

That’s exactly what i think it is.  And in my case, as I said earlier, My machine updated with automatc updates disabled.  I still can’t figure that one out.

Everything I tried, most things suggested on this thread, seemed to make things worse to the point where I thought my hard drive was gonna fry.  I still can’t believe Microsoft hasn’t addressed this problem.  It’s definately on their end.

Never had a problem with Firefox, but as time went on PC performance got worse and worse to the point where is didn’t even make sense to boot the machine. Total restore was my only solution.   Works fine now but I haven’t put IE7 back on either.

    Peace,

  • msdn70

OK i had the same problem and the best way to solve it is to download a registry scanner and fixer. the problem lies with your systems registry and corruption in these. the corruption will have come from downloading, visiting sites, installing programs.

I found the best program for identifying corrupty registry files was RegCure 1.4.0.4. Now ive always been suspicious of these programs and i definatly didnt want to gamble on buying the product and it not working. Therefore, i downloaded a torrernt of regcure + crack. Worked the crack, did the scan, fixed the problems and as of yet ive had no problems. fingers crossed tho cus it may just pop up again when i least expect it.

    hope this helps

    Hi Guys,

I’ve had the same problem for 2 days and it was doing my head in, I googled it and found this forum and well have been trying all the tips given, but one worked and made me realise I had 2 firewalls running at the same time.. my mcafee security sub ran out and I thought I’d download avast, anyway that and the windows firewall caused the error. I also re-installed my operating system but this didn’t work, then I uninstalled avast and deactivated my windows firewall, re-booted and re-set the windows firewall and uninstalled IE7 and walla I am up and working..

It was definitely the firewalls causing the conflict as I installed avast 2days ago and it happened over night not to mention IE7 having faults. Hope this helps, and thanks for all the tips..been a great help..whew anyway thought I’d give back some info. tested it today and re-installed avast and got the same error, un-installed it and it fixed the problem..so make sure you dont have 2 firewalls running or antivirus running at the same time and it will sort it out.

Cheers & good luck sorting yours out.

I started getting this error the other day and read this forum. I had recently downloaded pc tools and I already had symantic, after uninstalling pc tools I haven’t received this error again. Thanks!

  • msdn73

    Sorry for our English…

We have the problem in TWO PCs:

No Explorer 7.0, No Firefox, No Microsoft Updates… (Curiosly Explorer runs in some webs if you tipe the adress exactly…)

NO Outlook 2007, NO Ad-Aware 2007 Pro 7.0.13, NO Google Updater, NO Java (Control Panel) 1.6.0_01 (Updates), NO Omnipage 15 (Updates).

PROGRAMS THAT CONNECT CORRECTLY: Messenger 8.1, Spyboot Search&Destroy 1.4, Spyware Blaster 3.5.1, Atomic Clock Sync 2.7.0.3, jv16 PowerTools 2006 1.5.2.350, Teleport Pro 1.47, Filezilla 2.2.32, Adobe Acrobat 8.1 (Updates), dBpoweramp Music Converter 12

AFTER LOTS OF HOURS OF TEST OF A MICROSOFT TECHNICAL the solution are a little stupid:

REMOVE ETHERNET CARD DRIVERS, RESTART and wait windows detection.

    AND ALL WORKS AGAIN !!!!!

I tried the Restore and it restored a number of software programs I had removed, but I still can open my browser using IE7

  • msdn76

try this. worked for me, but not sure what they mean by “fix IE7 for a while”.

    Fix: navcancl ieframe.dll IE718 July 2007

    Problem:

navcancl ieframe.dll Microsoft Windows update broke IE7

    Solution:

    a. Go to Start menu -> Click Run -> type “iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff” (without quotes) and press enter. This will open MS Internet Explorer with a blank page and without any extensions.b. If you cannot see the Menu Bar. Right click on the toolbar area and click Menu Bar. c. Go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Security -> Disable Phishing FilterHopefully this should fix IE7 for a while, at least until Microsoft will create a fix for it.

  • msdn77 What finally worked for me.

We have two laptops that we run simultaneously  most of the time with no trouble, one of the laptops quit responding  today and I recieved this error message.

I went to the other laptop to find answers and the last thing I tried was shutting off the laptop that was connecting and the other started working. I’m serious. I went through restore, turning off this, rebooting the router, tryed to connect through firefox any thing else that was mentioned here.

You may try shutting one computer down if your running two off a router  first. Then try all the other stuff.

“It’s always the last thing that works.”

  • msdn78

I have had the same problem after installing updates from yes guess who. Ive read through all the posts here and I believe some of them are not related to the update but configuration issues ie 2 firewalls running. I have XP with IE7 and an ADSL wireless router. My laptop runs fine but desktop wont go no matter what I tried. No firewall and all IE settings at their lowest etc , phishing filter off etc.

SOLUTION: Go into control panel, add remove programs, tick the show updates option.

Scroll down to IE7 and remove the updates KB938127 and KB937134. Restart amchine and he presto. When you are next informed there are updates click custom install and untick those mentioned before. Tick the dont notify me of these again.

As said before some of the problems mentioned before are due to user config problems.

    Thanks Microsoft …………….. NOT

  • msdn79 I had this problem too. Everything like firefox, outlook, msn except IE7 works fine. My solusion is:Add “iexplorer.exe” to exception list of every firewall in your computer, no matter the firewall is enabled or not.In my case, I have Kaspersky internet security installed on my pc, but its firewall is DISABLED. Instead, I use the firewall provided by windows itself. After I put iexplorer.exe into Kaspersky’s safe list, the problem just went away, although its firewall is still disabled. Funny, though…….

  • msdn80

Ok, so there are six pages of posts for this problem and I am no closer to finding a solution.

I have tried most of the advice posted (that I am technically able to follow) and have not been able to resolve this problem. When I open IE it comes up with “can not display the webpage, or “address not valid”. I have owned my laptop for 4 months. I was using IE quite fine on the laptop when I first got it, so I know it worked… and then I loaded Microsoft Office and then I could no longer get IE to work. I then noticed the dnserror message.

I am also attached to a university that offers a support service through the university computer tech dept and they have told me that can not help me (they say they don’t support Vista).

I have contacted Bigpond (I am in Australia) and they got me to ping websites, so I know I am online – but they couldnt help me with the IE problem. I have emailed Compaq HP and they are trying to help me (but havent solved it yet), and now I read all of this and am at a loss.

There appear to be quite a few people in this forum that obviously have far greater computer skills than me and yet there appears to be no clear resolution to this matter. It appears that some things work for some and not for others.

I have no firewalls on, I have disabled addons, removed the updates identified by other contributers to this forum, deleted history, links, cookies etc, added IE to the exceptions, and if I have not done other actions, it is because it is beyond my computer skills. So if anyone can offer advice I would be grateful. I don’t even know where I should go now to get this sorted.

MICROSOFT IF YOU ARE READING THIS….  CAN YOU PLEASE OFFER SOME ADVICE?

  • msdn81

Yup!  Problem started last week.  No IE7 connect, no Messenger, Yahoo Messenger My space or Aol connectivity through Linksys router.  However local network works for file transfers and the 5 or so computers from Win98 thru xp pro and even MCE get on line fine .  This Dell with SP SP2 just won’t connect.  I reset the TCP/IP and still no joy.  I deleted McCaffee and insured firewalls are off.  I deleted all the cached web pages and any stored controls.  When I initiate I’m Exasperated 7 to go to a web page, it seems to lock up.  Now with auto updates and such, well it’s a real pain.  AOL 9 won’t connect and it can’t seem to report a problem.  Now I’d go on line and reinstall IE7 but I can’t go on line.  And I can’t find a redistribution package,  So I tried to install IE6 but from the distribution CD I created, it won’t install because there is a newer version and it won’t replace it.  I verified the lynksis router is open for all the computers, and none are blocked or limited in anyway.

Now I started off with an Atari 800 and an acoustic modem.  I’m not a computer expert or anything like that, but all my friends call me for help with thier woes.  I’ve researched this as best I can, and it looks like I’m backed into the corner of a system restore, with the necessity of moving lots and lots of files, having to reinstall months and months of updates etc.

I hope someone can come up with a more rational fix.  And of course, this isn’t solving the problem.  This is relieving the sympthom.  This can happen again.

I just completely recovered my computer with the original recovery discs (but all my versions are current) and I am back online.

However I have not reloaded Microsoft Word – which is when all my troubles started.

It appears to me the only way to resolve this is to do a complete recover/ reconfigure!

Good luck everyone with this issue.

  • msdn83

Unfortunately for me, i’ve the same problem since 18 August. The day before IE7 was working just fine. Though My MSN messeger works just fine

I suspect it might be due to the updates so i restore the PC to a few days before the updates took place, but it doesn’t work either. i try selectively deleting the updates suggested by some members, disabled phishing filter and windows firewalls, and even norton antivirus, start without add-ons but nothing works for me.

Is there anything else i can try?

  • msdn84

    ok ok .. very simple.

Go in installing and moving programs.

click so that the updating of each program is shown.

His updating sees in Internet Explorer 7.

    Desinstale this updating:

    KB938127 e KB937134

    Restart the computer.

Do not leave that this updating is installed again up to what to Microsoftware package it resolves the problem.

    Embraces to all.

I tried many of the above and nothing worked for me. I finally uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled it now I have a different problem. When IE7 starts up it tries to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 but hangs and nothing happens.

    Can anyone please help?

  • msdn86

GUYS I FOUND THE THING CAUSING THIS PROBLEM!

IT IS A PERMISSION ISSUE BETWEEN THE INTERNET EXPLORER AND WINDOWS VISTA

TO FIX THAT PROBLEM ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS FIX THE PERMISSIONS OF YOUR IEXPLORER.EXE FOR EXPERTS.

OR FOR THE BEGINNERS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO :

1- NEXT TO THE START KEY ON THE VERY LEFT LOWER CORNER YOU WILL SEE THE ICON OF THE INTERNET EXPLORER (((( RIGHT CLICK IT ))).

2- RIGHT CLICK IT ON IT THEN CHOOSE PROPERTIES.

    3- THEN CLICK ON ADVANCED.

4- THEN CHECK MARK (((( RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR ))) THEN HIT OK AND HIT OK AGAIN.

5- RUN INTERNET EXPLORER NORMALLY THEN HIT ALLOW WHEN THE MESSAGE COMES ON YOUR SCREEN

VOILAAAAA INTERNET EXPLORER  WORKS AGAIN !!!!

At the end i will say that a spyware could ber the reason for this problem since i have tried a different method by going to iexplore.exe in the program files then i right clicked on it to fix the permissions but suddenly i discovered that the control panel of the permissions was disabled for unknown reason and of course that is not normal!

HAPPY TO SEE ME?! ………..GO VISIT EGYPT!

  • msdn87

I can no longer access any web pages as i get the message res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff.htm (is that what everyone else gets?). I am NOT using VISTA.

I have had this issue for a few months but it would only occur randomly and last for about 1 day, then go back to normal. Now i hven’t been able to get on the internet for 4 days!!!

I have tried some of the solutions already posted but none work for me. ANNOYING TO SAY THE LEAST

  • msdn88

i’ve also been following these 6 pages and tried everything i was able to understand, uninstalled IE7 now can’t even get on line, unfortunately i also had restore points disabled and the error message i now get is”res://c:\windows\system32\xpsp3res.dll/dnserror.htm”any suggestions folks?

  • msdn89

Hi all, There are so many different Ideas here and it seems that different ones work for different people. If you read through all of them it seems that it has something to do with a firewall or internet security or an update. I tried pretty much everything mentioned in this post but nothing seemed to work for me. Finally I uninstalled my internet security (Kasperty) and reinstalled it and BAM, problem solved. I am back online now. So if you haven’t tried that yet, try it. It just might work for you too.

The file “iexplorer.exe” is not the same as the ‘iexplore.exe’ executable file for Internet Explorer and I am sure it was not wise to add “iexplorer.exe” to a firewall exception list or safe list. That is serious spyware.

I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition. I had just completed (two days ago) a fresh install of Vista, not a re-install or upgrade but “delete partition and start over”  install.

My particular encounter with this problem was immediately after installing windows update KB933928. I received the error “Res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm#” when I opened IE7, and in addition Outlook 2007 would not connect to email servers any longer.

I searched witout success for a solution to this problem that was clearly related to this update. I finally called MS tech support, and after about an hour talked to someone who was really helpful. She provided the following solution to my problem:

*****This will only work if you actually still have network connectivity (but simply can’t use IE7 or in my case Outlook 2007)******

Open a command window as an administrator, type the following commands:

    Ipconfig  /flushdns

Netsh int ip reset  —  computer will indicate a reboot, do it.

Upon restart, open command window as administrator

Netsh winsock reset – computer will indicate a reboot, do it.

The explanation given by the tech was that occasionally after updates, the DNS and Winsock caches get kinda flaky, and need to be reset. It was not recommended that his be a regular practice, but only if errors are occurring.

This completely solved the problem for me when none of the other solutions presented here did, so I thought I’d share it. I was even able to install the update that caused the problem, with no further problems.

    Hope it helps someone.

It happened to me today and the only page that was blocked all the time was google.

    The solution was:

    1. START >

    2. ALL PROGRAMS >>

    3. ACCESSORIES >>>

    4. SYSTEM TOOLS >>>>

    5. INTERNET EXPLORER (No Add-Ons)

It works just fine. Now I have to figure out which add-on was causing this problem.

    Hope it works for you!

I have read this post with great interest.

I have a wireless laptop and a desk top connected via an ethernet cable into my router. Approx 2 weeks ago the desktop stopped connecting and i was getting the now infamous message we are all talking about. I reset the router after trying different things and then the laptop stopped connecting also.

I contacted by broadband supplier who asked me to try many different things before eventually admitting to not knowing the solution either. they suggested i try a new router, which i did. I connected the new router which i borrowed from a neighbour directly into the laptop and the same error occured.

Before returning the router i carried out a system restore going back approx 6 weeks. To my surprised this worked so i bought a new router. I connected everything up into the desk top and did the system restore as before but this time no success. I am now using my laptop on a wireless connection with no issues but cannot get the desk top to access pages.

I have done just about everything this thread has asked in my limited capabilities and no success.

I cannot even get trend housecall on the desktop as it wont connect to anything.

I’ve been into the command screen and done ipconfig which shows i am connected via the ethernet cable.

Surely someone with more technical knowledge than me knows a work around for this.

Any help offered will be appreciated

P.S I’m in N.Ireland if that makes any kind of difference

I have just spent three days and three nights struggling with this after acquiring a whiz bang new machine with Vista Ultimate, and tried ALL the suggested solutions, and was about to buy a new adsl router, believing mine might be a bit old and not vista compatible.

On the off chance I rang tech support for NetComm just to check, and was advised that it was a DNS issue with some aussie ISP’s and was adivsed to do the following.

    Click:

    1. Control Panel

    2. Network and Sharing Centre

    3. Manage Network Connections

    4. Right click the local area connection and click properties

    5. Uncheck TCP/IPv6

    6. Ensure TCP/IPv4 is checked and double click

    7. Uncheck Obtain DNS server address automatically

    8. Check Use the following DNS server addresses

    9. In preferred DNS Server adresses insert: 4.2.2.2

    10. In alternate DNS server addressinsert: 4.2.2.3

    11. Click Okay all the way out and then restart computer.

  • I have had no issues since, internet browsing is faster than its ever been, and the whole thing is firewalled, with defenders and virus checkers all on, with all windows updates installed, using IE7 and Vista ultimate.

Many thanks to Balpreet at NetComm, and I hope this works for others.  According to Balpreet, it would seem that it is spasmodic, but nothing to do with hardware/software but is at the ISP end and their international connect settings.  The DNS server address he provided is apparently a huge american globally compatible address which Balpreet tells me shoud resolve this ieframe.dll/dnserror thing so it never happens again.  So far so good, many thanks to Balpreet.  Given all the experimentation and sort of remedies, it sort of makes sense that this could be the cause – i.e. at the ISP end and beyond.  Hope it helps others….
