Orders Web Service error after trying to create new data source and profile definition-Collection of common programming errors

hi all,

i was going through the exercise of creating a new data source (through profile schema manager) that pointed to a new database on my database server.  additionally, i created a profile definition that pointed to this new data source

before i updated the auth store or presentation file, i tried opening the Customer and Orders Manager, and got the error:

The Orders Web Service https:///OrdersWebService/OrdersWebService.asmx is currently unavailable. The Web Service might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your connection settings.

so, i tried hitting the URL with ?WSDL, and i was able to get the full WSDL definition

i also tried to update settings in the auth store and presentation file, and made sure that the CS runtime user had access to the database (and yes, i’ve been regularly resetting IIS)

nothing worked, so i removed everything i had done — rolled back the XML files, deleted my profile defintion, and deleted the data source i had created — still broken

this error is not logged in the Application log, nor do i see any other errors

can anyone shed any light on this?  where can i get more information?  this error message is completely unhelpful
