windows-7 windows-explorer internet-explorer windows-registry
I’m having several issues; I’ve thoroughly messed up my computer in the span of the past hour. I’ll try to explain as quickly as possible. I’m on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and I have an SSD boot device with all of my files on a HDD. I edited the registry keys forever ago to move my program files directory to the HDD (both 64-bit and 32-bit to the same directory, and yes, I edited both the 64-bit and 32-bit registries), and it’s worked just fine.Installed final version of IE 10, had the same issue I

I have a dual hard drive Windows 7 system, Windows is installed on an SSD (C:) and I modified the registry to try to force programs to install on second HDD drive (another letter). The registry edits are pretty simple, just a few keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to change the drive letter. For the most part the system is very fast and works great, but IE doesn’t work anymore. With IE10, it opens for a flash with a white window then closes. I tried installed IE

Are there any registry editors available that can edit a registry, given specific files (ntuser.dat, etc.)?Let´s say I have an old system-drive, we can call that “A”; If I were to plug A into my working computer, are there any tools available that can access the registry of the Windows-installation of A, given the specific files?(No, I can´t boot from it, that´s not an option.)

The Windows Registry is one of the biggest targets for criticism from practically everywhere. It’s not too hard to find disadvantages for its use, but MS has still kept it since Windows 95.What is the philosophy behind having a centralized database for all settings instead of lots of readable INI files? What actual advantages does the registry have over folders and sub-folders of settings files?

windows-7 folder windows-registry special-locations
I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named “My Pictures” in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer

I’m using a (non-administrator) roaming profile, with a size limit of 4MB.As you can imagine, it is extremely difficult to stay within that size limit.I’ve noticed that NTUser.dat, which holds my HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive, is 2560KB, single-handedly using more than half of that limit. Is there any way to shrink the hive without administrator privileges? I don’t mind losing any settings or preferences stored in it.

java installation windows-registry uninstall jre
I’m currently trying to change the default JRE on my computer from 8 to 7.I was attempting to fix a glitch involving the game Minecraft by updating to the JRE8 beta build, but it seems like that installer was corrupted and stopped midway before crashing. Now, whenever I try to launch any Java related program, it keeps on pointing to JRE8 even though it’s installed. I attempted to reinstall it but the launcher doesn’t seem to launch anymore even after I redownloaded it and tried several other bui

Back in the day, one merely need look at HKCR\.ext which would point to HKCR\type-handler.HKCR is now a dynamic link to both HKCU\software\classes and HKLM\software\classes, in a cascade pattern (local user first, then local machine). However, now we also have this ..\explorer\FileExts registry tree, presumably at both user and machine levels as well. What does this additional complexity provide?I don’t know about you, but I am forever fighting Windows to correctly open my files, with Explorer h

Somewhere between 50% and 70% of the times I start my computer, I get the following bluescreen:STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.I recently had to lower the memory clock from 1066MHz to 800 MHz because of data corruptions (random crashes from normal usage, failing shaders and textures in games, screen corruption, things like that…); it’s now runnin

I am using Google Chrome. I re-installed it today as it was crashing when I start it. I guess may be that this was due to any of my Extensions or Google Update. I disabled my extensions but it was still crashing. Now I installed an old version of chrome from http://www.oldapps.com/google_chrome.php. However, Chrome automaticallyuppdates itself (although Windows asks me before installing and I don’t grant it permissions, its still annoying to get Google update asking me permission after a couple

Is there a way to disable safe mode in Windows 7?In XP, I can modify the following keys to disable safe mode, which causes BSOD and reboot.[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network]Unlike XP, Windows 7 prevents users from editing, renaming or deleting such registry keys. This is an old problem dating back to Windows XP, now on my Windows 7 64-bit system it is starting to lose folder view settings when it comes to Details, List, Icons etc, everything else is stable for position and size. I tend use details view for most things and now folders are starting to revert to icon view sometimes, not 100% of the time mind you, but seems to be more frequent the more I use the PC.Yes I do have thousands of folders, so I think the default cache size is used up, exact same p
